Mission and Philosophy
Sahara’s mission is to improve the quality of life for women and their families and reduce the incidence of domestic violence in South Asian communities of South Florida through public awareness, education and advocacy.
Sahara of South Florida is a nonprofit organization focusing on empowerment of South Asian women through culture specific supportive counseling and advocacy. Sahara was formed to address the needs of South Asian women from Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka experiencing spousal abuse as well as abuse from in-laws and other family members. Abused women from minority communities may be hesitant to seek services from main stream organizations due to culturally upheld beliefs and attitudes against reporting domestic violence, language, cultural and immigration barriers. Sahara was formed to address this service gap and connect the affected women to main stream resources as well as provide culturally sensitive advocacy and support.
Sahara represents a group of men and women from diverse South Asian communities representing different nationalities, religions and languages. Our vision is to build on our common goals of empowerment of women and children in collaboration with other community organizations sharing similar values to make our communities healthy, harmonious and violence free.
